Ilias Markantonis

Ilias Markantonis was born in Athens in 1993 and he is a musician and shadow puppeteer. He graduated from Alimos Music High School, earned a Bachelor’s degree in Ethnomusicology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and completed a Master’s degree in Turkish ud at the Codarts University of the Arts.

He has participated in seminars and received private courses from renowned masters, including Yurdal TokcanAlexandros Arkadopoulos, Haig YazdjianKudsi ErgunerManos AchalinotopoulosCenk Erdoğan, Christos TsiamoulisNazih BorishEvgenios VoulgarisNizar RohanaRoss DalyAlexandros PapadimitrakisNikos SaragoudasMichalis Cholevas, and Petros Chalkias.

He has performed on the oud and clarinet in numerous projects across Greece, Turkey, the Netherlands, Russia, Tunisia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and France. In 2024, he was awarded the Said Chraibi First Prize at the Amsterdam Oud Festival Concours.

Alongside his musical career, he performs the traditional folk art of Greek shadow puppet theatre throughout Greece, Turkey, and Europe, preserving its classical forms while also exploring new creative directions.
