His music is deeply rooted in the radif tradition of Persian classical music, yet it remains intensely contemporary and accessible to audiences worldwide.

Throughout his distinguished career, Kalhor has placed a strong emphasis on cross-cultural collaboration, believing that music serves as a universal bridge. He is a co-founder of the acclaimed ensembles Dastan and Masters of Persian Music, and an original member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Ensemble, with whom he won a Grammy Award. His collaborative projects span a vast artistic spectrum, featuring partnerships with the Kronos Quartet, Azerbaijani mugham singer Alim Qasimov, Indian sitar virtuoso Shujaat Khan (in the ensemble Ghazal), and Turkish baglama master Erdal Erzincan.
