Derya Türkan & Murat Aydemir – Turkish Makam Theory & Practice / Music Ensemble Seminar
DAY 1
Murat Aydemir – Turkish Makam Theory & Practice
During the first day of this seminar, Murat Aydemir will explore the theoretical foundations of Turkish Makam, shedding light on the melodic structures, rhythmic patterns, and improvisational techniques that define this unique musical tradition. Through interactive analysis and demonstrations in different Makam and compositional forms, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the system as Aydemir will guide participants through the intricate modal system drawing from his acclaimed book “Turkish Music Makam Guide”.
Aydemir’s expertise as a Tanbur player and his years of experience as a teacher will be invaluable as he shares practical insights and techniques for understanding and playing within different Makams, as well as improvising and interpreting. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and explore various elements, including ornamentation, phrasing, and melodic development, under his guidance. This seminar offers a rare opportunity to learn from one of the foremost authorities in the field.
DAY 2
Derya Türkan – Turkish Music Ensemble
The second day of this seminar focuses on the music, compositions, styles, and culture of Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and Jewish musicians from Istanbul during the 18th and 20th centuries. While the 17th century marked the period in which the unique style of Ottoman music developed, the 18th century is recognized as the phase in which the style reached its peak. Renowned composers such as Nayi Osman Dede, Tabi Mustafa Efendi, Tanburi Zaharya, Dilhayat Kalfa, and Sultan Selim III played a crucial role in Ottoman music of that time.
Through this seminar, we aim to bridge the gap between past and present. We particularly explore the early 20th century by examining modern composers such as Tanburi Cemil Bey, Refik Fersan, and Serif Muhiddin Targan, allowing us to compare and analyze the evolution of this music.
