Turkish Makam Seminar
During this highly unique two day seminar, grand master Necati Çelik will teach us the main important aspects of classical Turkish music. Starting with an overview the main theoretical principles of makam, we will then practice a repertoire of instrumental pieces in forms such as saz semai, pesrev and longa, which will allow us to analyze and understand the modal structures and rhythmical patterns (usul). In extension, more advanced participants will be given the opportunity to improve their improvisational skills. Although the seminar might be most appealing for oud students, all instruments are welcome to join.
Teacher’s biography
Necati Çelik was born in Konya, Turkey, in 1955, the home of the Mevlevi order of Jelaleddin Rumi. Born into this crucible of music as a prodigy, he increased his development with the greatest oud masters of the time, most notably Cinuçen Tanrıkorur and Kadri Şençalar. Until the present day, Necati Çelik continues to perform, record and especially teach classical Ottoman music theory and practice in major universities and festivals through the United States, Europe and the Middle-East. He is widely regarded as the greatest Turkish master of the oud of his generation, praised for his high level playing skills and his art of develop extended and complex improvisations.
