Michaël Grébil Liberg
Michaël Grébil Liberg is a French composer, multi-instrumentalist, and researcher specializing in ancient and medieval music. Based in Brussels, his work bridges historical traditions with contemporary, electroacoustic, and experimental sounds.Grébil is renowned for his mastery of the medieval lute, citole, and vielle, focusing on improvisation and ornamentation. He frequently performs with world-class ensembles such as Hespèrion XXI (led by Jordi Savall), Alla Francesca, and Servir Antico.
His latest major project is the 2025 album L’Ymage, released via Sub Rosa. This ambitious 2-LP set reinterprets the works of medieval genius Guillaume de Machaut, blending Ars nova with dark folk, drone, and “aural cinema”. Beyond music, he creates “cinematographic objects” and visual essays, exploring themes of time and the unconscious through his Inner Chapel Initiative.
