Tammam Al Ramadan
Tammam Mohammed Al-Ramadan is a virtuoso of the nay (the traditional Middle Eastern end-blown flute), whose playing is celebrated for its spiritual depth and technical brilliance. Born in Aleppo, Syria, into a family of esteemed musicians, he was mentored by his father, the master Mohammed Al-Ramadan, inheriting a rich lineage of the Arab-Andalusian and Ottoman musical traditions.
Now based in Belgium, Tammam has become a pivotal figure in the European world music and early music scenes. His career is defined by high-profile collaborations that bridge Eastern and Western aesthetics. He is a regular collaborator with the legendary Jordi Savall and his ensemble Hespèrion XXI, contributing to major projects like Orient-Occident and Ibn Battuta. These performances have taken him to the world’s most prestigious stages, from the Philharmonie de Paris to the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin.
Beyond his work with Savall, Tammam is a founding member of the Refugees for Refugees ensemble, a project that earned critical acclaim and a Transglobal World Music Chart number-one spot. He also performs frequently with the Hathor Consort, showcasing his fluidity across classical maqam and contemporary improvisation. His artistry continues to serve as a vital cultural bridge, preserving the soul of Aleppo while exploring new, global musical frontiers.
