Wishah Ensemble is a Sufi vocal project inspired by the rich and time-honored musical heritage of Aleppo. It presents authentic muwashshahat alongside selections from traditional devotional dhikr, performed in a classical Sufi vocal style. The project seeks to revive this profound spiritual and musical legacy through a contemporary spirit that preserves its authenticity, conveying the atmosphere of remembrance and sacred listening to audiences with sincerity and refined artistic beauty.

In an age where voices grow ever more hurried and meanings become increasingly entangled, and where distance from heritage widens with each passing day, the remembrance of the Divine still holds a مقام—a station that does not fade—and the practice of sacred listening (samāʿ) preserves a mystery grasped only by the heart. From this spiritual horizon, the Wishah Ensemble was born: an artistic vision devoted to reviving the Sufi vocal tradition as it once flourished in its purest and most luminous form, where the Eastern maqam meets Arabic poetry, and the human voice becomes both presence and ritual—an authentic act of spiritual expression.

Wishah is a Sufi vocal ensemble rooted in the Aleppine musical heritage, one of the pillars of classical Arabic tarab and among the richest traditions of the muwashshah genre. The project is grounded in a deep understanding of the muwashshah’s structure: its melodic architecture, the subtle progression of maqamat, and the delicate relationship between poetic text and musical expression. At the same time, it maintains a clear commitment to the principles of traditional performance, preserving the dignity, refinement, and aesthetic intricacies of this heritage.

The project presents a carefully curated selection of Aleppine muwashshahat shaped across centuries, alongside texts drawn from very ancient Sufi dhikr traditions, some of which have been preserved orally within circles of samāʿ and remembrance. These texts are not performed merely as musical material, but as profound emotional and spiritual experiences. Here, singing becomes an act of presence—moving gradually from quiet contemplation to ecstatic expression—within a framework that honors both the spirit of the maqam and the rhythm of the word.

Particular attention is given to the modal dimension of the music, with thoughtful movement between Eastern maqamat guided by a refined expressive awareness that respects the nature and meaning of each text.
