Ambi Subramaniam – Indian violin workshop

Ambi Subramaniam (Bangalore, India)

Bio:

Hailed as “the new king of Indian classical violin” and “India’s Itzhak Perlman,” Ambi Subramaniam began his musical journey at the tender age of three under the tutelage of his father, Dr. L. Subramaniam. With numerous awards and recognitions, Ambi runs the SaPa in Schools program, teaching music to thousands of students worldwide. He also co-hosts The SaPa Show on Sankara TV, imparting global music education to young children. Ambi serves as a youth delegate at the United Nations for the Sri Chinmoy Peace Meditation group.

Instrument Explanation:

Originating in Europe during the Renaissance period, the violin became popular due to its compatibility with Indian classical music. While the construction remains the same, Indian and Western violin playing techniques, tuning, and postures differ significantly. The violin found its place in both Carnatic and Hindustani music, captivating audiences with its versatility. Indian violinists have gained international recognition, with legends like Yehudi Menuhin expressing admiration for their unique style.

Workshop Introduction:

This workshop invites non-Indian musicians to incorporate elements of Indian music into their own compositions. Participants will explore structured improvisation, raga improvisation, nadai and rhythmic cycles, konnakol (vocal percussion), and string techniques. Through hands-on activities and collaborative explorations, musicians will develop a solid foundation in Indian music concepts and techniques, enabling them to infuse their music with Indian flavors. The workshop fosters a supportive learning environment, encouraging musical and cultural exchange.
