Tarek Abdallah & Youssef Hbeisch: “Ousoul”

The album and concert program Ousoul is the fruit of the unique musical partnership of two distinguished musicians from Alexandria, Egypt: oud player Tarek Abdallah and riqq master Adel Shams El Din. Their original compositions follow the framework of the traditional classical Arabic musical suite known as wasla, which links together several sung and instrumental forms from different cycles in the same mode – or maqâm.
While retaining modal improvisation as a central element, they make usage of a wide range of traditional and newly composed rhythmic cycles. The Ousoul concert program consists of five instrumental suites based on five different maqâmat: Nahâwand, Higâzkâr, Râst, Bayyâtî and Sîkâh. In Arabic, the word usûl / ousoul means: origin, root, foundation. In recent years, Tarek Abdallah is accompanied by the remarkable percussionist, composer and scholar remarkable Yousef Hbeisch.
