Description

“I grew up in a village in Cyprus, just a few hundred meters from the so-called ‘Green Line’. In 1974, a Turkish military invasion split the island in two, forcing my parents and hundreds of thousands of others to flee their ancestral land and become refugees in their own country. That experience of loss and displacement quietly stayed with me throughout my life.

Decades later, in 2015, a musical invitation to perform at the Talos Festival took me to Puglia, in Southern Italy. During a break from long rehearsals, a spontaneous, emotional sequence of notes emerged from my violin. I had just discovered that not far from where I was standing, hundreds of refugees—children, young men and women—were drowning in the Mediterranean, desperate and forgotten.

That moment inspired Displaced Dreams—a musical journey shaped by grief, anger and hope. It is dedicated to those forced to leave their homelands in search of dignity, freedom and safety, reminding us of our shared humanity.”

Echoes of displacement. Across the vast expanse of the earth, footprints vanish beneath shifting sands and tides of sorrow. The wind carries whispered names – Syrian, Palestinian, Kurdish, Sudanese, Afghan – fading echoes of lives uprooted, of homes reduced to memory and dust. A mother cradles her child beneath an iron sky, her lullaby drowned by the drone of distant war. A father walks barefoot through the bones of his ancestors, searching for a land that will not turn him away. A child, eyes wide with the weight of lost innocence, reaches for a hand that may never come. Borders rise like fortresses, cold and unyielding. The sea swallows thousands, the desert drinks the last breath of the weary, and in the silence of the world’s indifference, humanity crumbles like brittle parchment.

But still, they walk. Carrying not just hunger, but hope. Not just wounds, but resilience. A thousand tongues weave the same prayer into the wind – a plea not for pity, but for passage. For a place where roots may grow once more, where new stories may unfold, where the word home regains its meaning.

And so, the exodus continues, a river of souls flowing against the tide of fear and apathy. Michalis Kouloumis
